Brass is a metal alloy of copper and zinc with a history spanning approximately 5,000 years. With its warm golden tones, ease of working and natural resistance to corrosion, it occupies an irreplaceable position in both industrial and decorative applications. In furniture design, brass may appear to be merely a detail, yet it is the quiet protagonist that defines the entire character of a design.
Solid Brass: Pure copper-zinc alloy, solid brass is the highest-quality and most durable option. It develops natural patina over time, gaining even more character. It is heavy, expensive, and preferred particularly for premium furniture legs and custom-made accessories. Solid brass is an investment that can serve for generations.
PVD-Coated Brass: Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) is an advanced technology that deposits a titanium nitride layer of approximately 0.4 microns onto stainless steel. The process is carried out in an atmospheric vacuum, resulting in a surface with superior resistance to scratching, corrosion and UV. PVD-coated pieces carry the warm tone of solid brass while offering the durability of stainless steel.
Electroplating (Bath Coating): The most economical coating method. A thin brass layer is deposited onto DKP metal through electrolysis. It is suitable for small accessories and decorative objects, but quality diminishes on larger furniture pieces. The bath's capacity cannot homogeneously coat large surface areas. It is susceptible to rust and corrosion and unsuitable for outdoor use.
Aged / Antique Brass: Brass aged through natural or chemical processes is preferred in vintage and retro designs. Its darkened, oxidized appearance adds a nostalgic depth to spaces. It is particularly popular in Mid-Century Modern and industrial style furniture.
Furniture Legs: Brass legs are the most defining design element of coffee tables, consoles and side tables. Slender, tapered brass legs represent contemporary elegance; thick, geometric forms express a bold luxury statement. The meeting of a marble surface with brass legs is part of modern furniture design's classic iconography.
Handles and Hardware: Cabinet handles, drawer pulls and hinges are the small but impactful jewels of furniture. Brass handles add a luxury accent to neutral-toned wood cabinetry. T-bar, round knob and concealed handle profiles are the most popular forms.
Accent Details: Frame profiles, mirror edging, shelf supports and decorative strips — brass details elevate the entirety of a piece significantly. Brass lines on dark wood create an elegant contrast.
Brass creates its strongest contrast with black — a sophisticated and timeless pairing. With white, it forms a fresh, modern atmosphere. When matched with deep green and navy tones, it offers a rich, layered visual. With grey tones, it captures a harmonious and serene elegance.
For PVD-coated surfaces, a soft microfiber cloth and mild detergent are sufficient. Abrasive cleaners should be avoided. For solid brass pieces, dedicated brass cleaning solutions may be used. If natural patina is unwanted, regular polishing is required; if desired, patina is time and use's natural gift.
Brass surfaces retain fingerprints — this is a natural characteristic easily addressed with regular wiping. They should be kept away from chemical spray cleaners and chlorinated substances.
