Modoko Furniture District Tour
A visiting architect's working guide — 600+ ateliers, one cluster, hotel-to-airport logistics included.
Modoko (Mobilya & Dekorasyon Organize Sanayi Bölgesi) is Istanbul's premier furniture manufacturing district. Founded in the 1980s on the city's Asian side, it hosts roughly 600+ furniture-related businesses in one planned industrial zone — premium custom ateliers, hospitality FF&E manufacturers, mid-tier producers, sample-and-showroom operations, and material suppliers. For a foreign architect or interior designer planning a sourcing trip, Modoko represents the highest-density premium furniture cluster in Eurasia. This page is the working guide: getting there, where to stay, atelier booking workflow, photography rules, lunch and logistics. Last updated April 30, 2026.
Getting There — Airport & Transport
Sabiha Gokcen International (SAW)
Asian-side airport. 20 minutes by car to Modoko via D-100 highway. Recommended for Modoko-only trips. Most major European, GCC and CIS routes.
Pickup: arrange with host atelier — Archidecors coordinates SAW pickup free for confirmed buyers.
Istanbul Airport (IST)
European-side airport. 60-75 minutes by car to Modoko via Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge. Most US and intercontinental routes.
If your only option is IST, plan an extra night — first-day jet lag combined with bridge traffic eats the morning.
Inter-atelier transport in Modoko. Do not rent a car. Premium ateliers (including ours) coordinate dedicated driver and inter-atelier transit free for buyers with confirmed budget. Public transport options exist (Marmaray + bus combination) but waste 60-90 minutes per leg. A dedicated driver for 4 days runs $150-300, often picked up by the host atelier.
For the airport return on departure day, book transport with your host atelier the previous afternoon — Istanbul traffic is unpredictable, especially on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings.
Where to Stay — Hotel Suggestions
Modoko itself is an industrial zone with no hotels. Stay in adjacent neighborhoods within 5-15 minute drive radius. Below are categories ranked for sourcing-trip practicality, not tourist appeal.
Atasehir Business District
5-10 min · 4-5★
Closest to Modoko. Several international 4-5 star chains (Hilton, Sheraton, Wyndham brand-managed). Business-traveler infrastructure: 24/7 concierge, English-fluent staff, business center.
Kadikoy / Bostanci
15-25 min · 3-5★ boutique
Cultural neighborhood with character — boutique hotels, waterfront views, walkable cafes. Better for evening relaxation. Daytime traffic to Modoko adds 15-20 min.
Bagdat Caddesi (Erenköy/Suadiye)
12-20 min · 4-5★
Upscale shopping street, premium hotels, restaurants. Convenient if your trip blends sourcing with leisure. Wider variety of dining.
Premium ateliers email a curated 3-5 hotel shortlist for confirmed buyers, including negotiated business rates. Archidecors does this as part of the trip coordination service.
Atelier Visit Booking Workflow
- 01
Pre-trip Email
Send a brief outline (project type, budget range, expected delivery, certification requirements) to 5-8 shortlisted ateliers 3-4 weeks before arrival. Premium ateliers reply within 24 hours with available meeting slots and any pre-NDA forms.
- 02
Schedule Lock-In
Confirm visit time slots one week before arrival. Plan 2-3 visits per day maximum (each 2-3 hours). For a 3-day Modoko trip, 5-8 atelier visits is realistic. Leave Day 4 for final sample selection and quote rounds.
- 03
Pre-NDA & Brief Sharing
For projects requiring design protection, sign NDA before sharing CAD/3D files. Premium ateliers have standard NDA templates — review their version, request adjustments if needed (governing law, exclusivity period, breach penalty).
- 04
On-Site Visit Structure
Typical 2-3 hour visit: 30 min facility tour (production line, finishing room, sample showroom), 30 min material inventory inspection, 30-45 min brief discussion with founder/principal, 30 min Q&A and sample selection start, optional 30-60 min lunch.
- 05
Post-Visit Follow-Up
Within 48 hours of visit, premium ateliers send: meeting minutes, sample shipment confirmation, indicative quote (if brief was clear), and next-step proposal. Compare offers in a single spreadsheet using your standard line items.
Photography, Lunch & Cultural Notes
Photography Rules
Most ateliers welcome photography of production lines, finished pieces, and material inventory — useful for your project documentation. Always ask first. Restrictions: other clients' active projects, NDA-protected designs, operator-specific sample sheets. Tip: bring small business cards for staff if you take portraits.
Lunch & Local Etiquette
Most premium ateliers offer working lunch with the founder/principal — a key relationship-building step in Turkish business culture. Accept if offered. Common dishes: kebabs, mezes, Turkish coffee. Tea (cay) is the universal hospitality offering — always accept the first round.
Documents to Bring
Business cards (English + ideally one side Turkish translation), 1-page brief outline (PDF on tablet), reference moodboard, printed plans for measured items, signed NDA from your end if you have one. Many premium ateliers have iPad-equipped meeting rooms — digital is fine but always bring paper backups.
Cultural note for first-time visitors. Turkish business culture rewards relationship-building. Founders and principals expect a 30-minute "getting to know each other" conversation before commercial brief. Skip this step at your peril — your first quote will reflect transactional positioning rather than partnership. Plan your trip with this rhythm in mind.
