Get Quote2026 Industry Overview
Everything international buyers need to know about sourcing furniture from Turkey — from Modoko's 3,000 workshops to $5.2 billion in annual exports.
Turkey reached $5.2 billion in annual furniture exports in 2025, cementing its position as the world's 5th largest furniture exporter behind China, Germany, Italy, and Poland. What distinguishes the Turkish industry is a rare combination: skilled craftsmanship ecosystems passed through three generations, local abundance of key raw materials (Afyon and Marmara marble, Anatolian oak and walnut, Balkans-sourced beech), and geographic proximity to major export markets within 5-21 days by sea.
The industry structure favors custom production. Unlike mass-market furniture economies where standardization rules, Turkish workshops retain strong bespoke capability — especially at the premium and luxury tier. A typical Istanbul workshop can produce custom dimensions, specialty materials, and one-off designs without the MOQ constraints typical of Chinese or Vietnamese factories. This makes Turkey particularly attractive for hospitality FF&E, luxury residential, villa projects, yacht interiors, and boutique hotel procurement.
Pricing sits in a sweet spot: premium quality at 40-60% below Italian or German equivalents, with lead times 4-6 weeks faster than competing Asian suppliers. For a hotel operator or villa developer sourcing internationally, this pricing-quality-speed combination is rarely matched elsewhere.
Modoko (Mobilyacılar Organize Sanayi Bölgesi — Furniture Industrial Organized Zone) is the heart of Turkish furniture manufacturing. Established in the 1970s on the Asian side of Istanbul near Sabiha Gökçen Airport, Modoko consolidates over 3,000 furniture-related workshops in a dense 5 km radius: casegood manufacturers, upholstery houses, marble cutters, brass and metal fabricators, hardware suppliers (Blum, Hettich, Hafele authorized dealers), fabric wholesalers, and dedicated export logistics firms.
The concentration creates ecosystem efficiency. A villa project that requires custom casegoods, marble tabletops, brass hardware, and bespoke upholstery can be sourced within 500 meters — the supplier network handles integration, not the buyer. Factory visits are practical: an international buyer can complete 5-8 supplier meetings in a single day, compared to the cross-city logistics required in Milan or the province-hopping typical of Chinese furniture sourcing.
Archidecors has operated within Modoko since 1981. Our 5,000 m² workshop sits in the district's heritage zone, with master craftsmen who learned their trade from the founders — continuity that is increasingly rare in the industry.

Turkey is the world's 5th largest furniture exporter with $5.2 billion in annual furniture exports as of 2025 (most recent data). The industry employs over 300,000 people and ships to 185 countries. Istanbul alone hosts over 3,000 furniture manufacturers, concentrated primarily in the Modoko and Masko industrial districts. Turkey's position benefits from skilled craftsmanship, local raw materials (marble, wood, metals), and proximity to key markets in Europe, Middle East, and North Africa.
Modoko (Mobilyacılar Organize Sanayi Bölgesi) is Istanbul's primary furniture manufacturing district, located on the Asian side near Sabiha Gökçen Airport. Established in the 1970s, it consolidates over 3,000 furniture workshops, showrooms, upholstery houses, marble cutters, hardware suppliers, and export logistics providers within a 5 km radius. This concentration creates the ecosystem efficiency that makes Turkish custom furniture competitive — a single visit can cover multiple suppliers and specialized craftsmen.
Turkish furniture manufacturers offer European-quality craftsmanship at 40-60% below Italian pricing. Compared to China, Turkish manufacturers provide better custom capability for smaller orders (no MOQ for project work), faster lead times to European markets (3-10 days sea freight vs 35-45 days from China), and higher finish quality for luxury segment. Turkey's strategic location between East and West also reduces logistics complexity for buyers in the UK, Germany, Gulf states, and North Africa.
Five criteria: (1) In-house production — verify the supplier owns its factory, not a trading company. (2) Years in operation — 15+ years preferred for consistent quality. (3) Verifiable export references — ask for specific international projects with client names. (4) Certifications — ISO 9001 is standard, FIRA testing and Martindale 40,000+ fabrics required for hospitality, Crib 5 for UK market. (5) Direct access to decision-makers — avoid suppliers that route every message through sales agents.
Sea freight is standard for furniture. Direct routes from Istanbul: Gulf states (Dubai, Doha, Jeddah) 5-8 days, USA East Coast 14-21 days, UK and Northern Europe 7-12 days, Mediterranean Europe 3-7 days. Common shipping terms are FOB Istanbul (buyer handles freight), CIF destination port (seller insures to port), and DDP delivered duty paid (seller handles everything). A 40 ft container holds approximately 30-50 furniture items depending on size. Air freight is available for urgent small orders but rarely used for full projects.
